Getting to church

Getting everyone to church…

Bridegroom, best man or woman and ushers…

The bridegroom and his party should be in church at least half an hour before the service is due to start or 20 minutes before the first guests arrive, which is usually earlier!

The ushers must know who is sitting where so that they can direct guests to the correct part of the church.

The orders of service should arrive with the bridegroom’s party if they haven’t been left in church at the rehearsal.

Do check that the rings are in church when you arrive……

Guests…

Parking is extremely limited at both churches; you should enquire via your reception venue about minibuses to run a shuttle service between reception venue and church so that the last guests arrive 20 minutes before the service start time. Do talk to us first if you plan anything larger there have been some issues in the past!

When using buses make sure that the first trip is early enough and make sure that this bus is full! Often guests are reluctant to take the first bus, having to add in an additional trip will delay the entire wedding.

If you have young children at the service you might consider getting the ushers to reserve seats near the door for them and for them to travel on the ‘last bus’.

There is no turning area in the lane up to Lullington church – ‘vintage’ vehicles have great problems with this.

Please ensure vehicles can negotiate Gloucester Lodge if your reception is at Orchardleigh House and the service at All Saints. Double-decker buses from Orchardleigh House cannot negotiate the gates at Gloucester Lodge and have to go the ‘long way’ round and negotiate a very narrow bridge with right angled bends on either side – not all buses can successfully negotiate this. If you must use a double-decker or other large bus to All Saints (from whatever reception venue) get your bus company to check the route!

There is no problem with using a few cars to transport those with mobility issues to the churches and the cars can come to the church gate to drop off and then park in the usual places.

At Lullington, please do not park on the green or verges, park on the road leading back to Orchardleigh (after the houses) and ensure there is still room for a bus to get through, signs will remind you! Please take care not to block the narrow lanes in Lullington village or obstruct entrances to properties.

At Orchardleigh please park in the area marked ‘Visitor Parking’

Please ensure that photographers and videographers are also aware of this as they are very often decide the rules don’t apply to them! This also applies when you have wedding rehearsals in the church. The grass ‘green’ is private property and does not belong to the church so please ensure no-one parks on it!

Bridesmaids, Flower Girls, Page Boys and Bride…

Please make sure that you plan for the bride to arrive at the church gate five minutes before the service is due to start and the bridesmaids, flower girls and page boys arrive at least ten minutes before the service is due to start, unless the same car has to return to pick up the bride. In this case they will need to be there at so that the car can return, collect the bride – with time for photographs – and still have the bride at church in time…

FAILURE TO ARRIVE IN TIME WILL RESULT IN YOUR SERVICE BEING SHORTENED!

There have been instances where we have been kept waiting for long periods – not only is this discourteous to your guests and those taking part in the service, but it fails to recognise that the clergy and others who work hard to ensure that your marriage runs smoothly have other appointments and specially arrange their schedules to take a service at the time you have booked. Practically, if you have small children in the congregation and they have been waiting a long time in church before the service starts they may not be a quiet as you would like during the service…
